Types of Polished Concrete

The three primary types of polished concrete we offer:

Mechanically Polished Concrete

This is the most durable and high-end polished concrete option. The process involves grinding the concrete slab using planetary polishers and diamond abrasives to achieve a smooth, high-gloss finish. A densifier is applied to harden the surface and enhance its natural beauty. This method creates a dense, elegant floor that can withstand heavy foot traffic and mechanical wear. Mechanically polished concrete is scratch-resistant, making it ideal for high-traffic commercial settings such as shopping centres, showrooms, and warehouses.

Hone and Seal Finish

Hone and seal finishes offer customisable gloss levels and slip resistance. This method involves grinding the concrete surface and applying a clear resin sealant. The resin not only protects the concrete but also brings out its natural colour, making it an attractive choice for both indoor and outdoor areas. This finish is durable, easy to clean, and suitable for a range of environments.

Modern Industrial Finish

The modern industrial finish provides a natural, enhanced concrete appearance with minimal or zero stone exposure. This contemporary look is increasingly popular, especially in commercial and industrial settings, for its understated, clean aesthetic. The surface is polished but left without significant grinding, maintaining the concrete’s natural look and colour.

Choosing Your Finish

When selecting polished concrete for your property, it’s important to understand the different options available in terms of exposure levels and gloss finishes:

Full Exposure

This involves grinding deep into the concrete to reveal a high level of stone exposure, creating a vibrant, textured look. This finish is ideal for those who want to showcase the stone elements within the concrete.

Salt and Pepper Finish

For a subtler look, the salt and pepper finish offers minimal stone exposure. This option provides a more varied, textured appearance without overpowering the space.

Modern Industrial Finish

Here, the concrete is polished without exposing the stone, offering a sleek, natural finish that highlights the concrete’s inherent qualities.

Regarding gloss levels, mechanically polished concrete typically offers a high-gloss sheen, which can be adjusted by increasing the number of polishing stages. For a lower-gloss or matte finish, the hone-and-seal method offers flexibility to achieve the desired look while maintaining durability.

Slip Resistance

When choosing polished concrete, slip resistance is a key factor to consider, particularly for commercial spaces. While mechanically polished concrete can be smooth and slippery when wet, opting for a matte finish can reduce the risk. Additionally, the hone-and-seal finish allows for customisable slip-resistance ratings, from P1 to P5 (or R9 to R13), making it suitable for various environments.

Benefits of Polished Concrete

Polished concrete offers a wealth of benefits, making it an ideal flooring solution for both commercial and residential properties:

Durability

Polished concrete is incredibly hard-wearing and can withstand heavy use in high-traffic areas. This makes it perfect for commercial spaces such as warehouses, retail stores, and showrooms.

Aesthetic Appeal

The glossy finish of polished concrete reflects light beautifully, creating a bright, welcoming atmosphere in any space. The customisable look can range from highly polished for a modern aesthetic to more industrial and understated finishes.

Low Maintenance

Polished concrete is easy to maintain. Regular sweeping and occasional damp mopping are usually all that’s needed to keep the surface looking pristine.

Cost-Effectiveness

Although the initial installation costs may be higher than some alternatives, polished concrete’s longevity and low maintenance costs provide excellent value over time.

Hygienic and Non-Porous

Polished concrete does not trap dust, allergens, or bacteria, making it ideal for environments where hygiene is a priority, such as hospitals, kitchens, and restaurants.

Residential

For residential spaces, polished concrete offers:

Versatility

Homeowners can choose from various finishes and gloss levels, creating a unique look that complements their interior design.

Comfort Underfoot

Polished concrete is comfortable to walk on, especially in the summer, and can be paired with rugs or heating systems for added warmth in the winter.

Eco-Friendly Choice

By utilising existing concrete slabs, polished concrete minimises the need for new materials, making it an environmentally conscious flooring option.

Stain Resistance

Properly sealed polished concrete floors are resistant to stains, making them ideal for high-use areas like kitchens and dining rooms.

Increased Property Value

The modern, stylish look of polished concrete can boost the value of your home and enhance its appeal to potential buyers.

Decisions Post-Choice of Polish

When considering polished concrete, there are several factors to keep in mind, including exposure level, gloss level, and slip resistance.

Exposure levels range from Full Exposure, where a high level of stone is revealed by cutting or grinding deep into the concrete, to Cream, which involves polishing the surface only with no stone exposure, and Salt & Pepper, where a small amount of stone is exposed for a subtle finish.

Gloss levels vary as well; mechanically polished concrete always has some sheen, with matte finishes offering a lower sheen compared to high-gloss options. The level of gloss increases with additional polishing stages. Hone with clear-resin also offers a wide range of gloss levels, from almost no gloss to a high-gloss finish.

Slip resistance is another important factor—mechanically polished concrete is smooth and can be slippery when wet, especially with a high-gloss finish, though a matte finish is less slippery. Unlike most other internal designer floors such as tiles or vinyl, which are not designed to be slip-resistant, Hone with resin-coat allows for customizable slip resistance, with ratings available from P1 to P5 (or R9 to R13), and can also achieve a smooth finish in dry areas where slip resistance is not required.

We don’t mind which way you want your polished concrete to be, as long as you get the finish you like.
